An Amalfi Coast wedding, photographed as it happens
The Amalfi Coast is one of my favourite places in Italy to photograph a wedding, and every wedding I have photographed here has been different. The coastline runs for about 40 km (25 miles), jagged and spectacular the whole way, with unspoiled nature and a sea that looks like a dream. For a wedding photographer it offers endless possibilities for original photographs, all year round.
I photograph the day as a story: the preparations, the ceremony, your guests, the dinner, the light going down over the water. My style is documentary and unobtrusive – most of the time you will not notice me – but I also make sure the family groups and portraits you care about are all there.
Where to get married on the Amalfi Coast
The choice is wide, and each town has its own character, beauty and particularities. Here are the main places couples choose:
- Sorrento – the most popular choice for a wedding on the coast: well organised, easy to reach and full of terraces over the Bay of Naples.
- Positano – the pearl of the Amalfi Coast, with breathtaking cliffs and both church and civil ceremonies possible.
- Ravello – high on the hill in the middle of the coast, home to Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rufolo and Hotel Caruso.
- Amalfi, Maiori, Minori and Praiano – further along the coast, with many hidden gems in between.
- Capri and Massa Lubrense – the island, and a town near Sorrento where I have photographed weddings at sunset.
Planning a wedding on the Amalfi Coast?

Many weddings on the Amalfi Coast are civil ceremonies. They take place in locations designated by each municipality, in private villas or on hotel terraces – and some of those terraces have truly breathtaking views. Photographs of a civil ceremony here are often spectacular.
If you would like a Catholic ceremony, Positano is the place to look: the Church of the Assunta, in the heart of the town, is one of the very few churches on the coast where a religious wedding can take place. In Sorrento a Catholic church wedding is not possible; ceremonies there are civil, symbolic or, at some venues, Protestant. Many venues also offer symbolic blessings on their terraces. Wedding photos from the sea
One of the things I love most is taking the two of you out on a boat. You can rent a motorboat for as long as the photoshoot needs, and seen from the sea the Amalfi Coast looks more romantic than ever. My couples particularly love this part of the day. Planning and logistics
My advice from experience: if you can, visit the coast on a short holiday before choosing your venue. The Amalfi Coast offers an almost endless number of locations, and seeing them in person makes the decision much easier. If that is not possible, there are many wedding planners on the coast who will gladly help you.
Getting around is part of the adventure. Travelling the coast road on the local bus is an experience in itself. Many couples base their guests in Sorrento, which is easy to reach, and use boats to visit the rest of the coast. Positano can be reached by car, by motorbike or by boat, and Ravello rewards those happy to travel a little further. The restaurants along the coast serve some of the best food in Italy, whatever your budget.
Light, sunsets and the time of year
The golden hour is the most beautiful moment of the day here. At sunset the sky turns an intense blue and gold, and at venues such as Villa Antiche Mura the cake is traditionally cut at exactly that moment. How I work on your wedding day
Before the wedding we go through the timeline together and I ask for a list of the family groups and principal guests you want photographed. If I have not worked at your venue before, I research it and visit it beforehand to see how the light falls and where the best backdrops are. On the day I carry two backup cameras, multiple lenses and spare batteries, so nothing is left to chance.
